Drawing upon his experience as an ambassador and master photographer for a prestigious European high-end optical equipment brand, he approaches every undertaking with a comprehensive deployment of a full-frame medium format based technical camera system and precise shooting methodologies. This approach underscores that his photographic practice transcends mere documentation, representing a visual discourse that synthesises theoretical inquiry with technical exactitude. For years, he has honed a highly advanced photographic technique, particularly in the operation of technical cameras, developing a method that faithfully reconstructs reality through precise optical control and distortion suppression. The outcome of countless camera and lens trials, meticulously seeking the optimal equipment configuration that resonates most closely with his vision, embodies something beyond a simple image. The operation of equipment, for him, is not mere mechanical handling but functions as a conduit for perceiving and interpreting reality. The camera and lens serve as tools for projecting his gaze onto reality with precision, acting simultaneously as mechanisms for extending sensation and perception. This demonstrates how photography can become a visual language capable of conveying subjective truth, and from the selection of equipment to the composition and editing of images, his aesthetic stance and philosophical contemplation are consistently revealed at every stage.
All images are fundamentally constructed as three-dimensional panoramas, employing a combination of various advanced optical equipment and classical techniques such as Stitching, Stacking, Tilt & Shift, Infrared, UV, and Long Exposure to forge a unified scene. Notably, a method of absolute horizontal stitching is adopted to minimise optical distortion, a process that involves meticulously combining images of diverse focal lengths to reconstruct an expanded space. Consequently, the scene functions as a multi-layered record of physical reality, rather than a digital manipulation. Furthermore, Focus-Stacking is actively utilised to confer uniform focus upon all elements within the scene, thereby realising a form of 'planar depth' that eschews perspective. These hyper-focused images, while seemingly unreal, paradoxically reveal a more essential reality, presenting not unreality as reality, but reality as unreality. Although composed as a single image, the scene functions as a matrixial structure built upon a coordinate system, culminating in a complex and systematic record.
All works in this series are the result of the artist's planning and working in Korea for over ten years, staying and waiting in the sublime nature of Korea's coastline, national parks, and national geological parks, and observing the dramatic topography of nature firsthand. He embraces long periods of waiting and repeated visits to encounter landscapes that align with the narrative context he seeks. The 『Manual of Landscape』 series is a body of work that records the dramatic terrain of Korea's nature, encompassing coastlines, national parks, and national geological parks, not consuming nature as merely beautiful scenery but confronting it as a living structure, quietly collecting the rhythm of its changes like an ascetic. The images, captured through a continuum of waiting during his contemplative journeys along mountains, valleys, riversides, and coastlines, interpret the landscape through the lens of human perspective and the flow of time. This series is structured through the following thematic layers:
1. At That Time, unveils the temporality layered within the landscape, akin to Henri Bergson's concept of 'durée'. This is not merely a record of historical traces but an endeavour to weave the sensation of time imbued within space. The artist paradoxically leverages the characteristic of photography as a frozen moment to realise a state where past and present coexist within a single frame. As a result, the image is not reducible to a singular 'present', and the viewer senses the layers of time deposited within the landscape. Photography, while seemingly fixing the flow of time, simultaneously allows it to stream forth, creating a moment where a single image transforms into an edifice of time. This marks the beginning of breaking free from conventional frameworks of perceiving and conceptualising landscape through the artist's prolonged introspection and ascetic process concerning photography's capacity for documentation, temporality, and spatiality.
2. The Eyes, grounded in Martin Heidegger's concept of 'Dasein' (being-in-the-world), explores how the human gaze directed upon the landscape leads to a contemplation of existence. Through ultra-high-resolution panoramic techniques, the artist visualises minute elements imperceptible to the naked eye, such as the growth direction of plants, the grain of rocks, and the lingering traces of clouds. This work expands and recalibrates the limits of perception, transforming nature from a mere object of observation into a subject that gazes back at the viewer. Within the image, the viewer loses the position of the 'beholder' and instead experiences their existence as the 'beheld'. This holds significant implications in de-centring the observer's perspective photographically and in suggesting that landscape is formed within an ontological relationship. Despite representing the image of reality through a machine that reinterprets the human eye anatomically, the artist has undergone a period of deep contemplation and reflection on the optical errors and aberrations inherent in cameras and lenses. Furthermore, these are the artist's experiences in forging a visual grammar that minimises optical errors and visual discrepancies.

Half & Half is a work that explores the boundaries and possibilities of connection between worlds we commonly divide into dichotomies: nature and city, light and darkness, the material and the immaterial. The central question of this series is how these opposing elements can form a 'connectable flow' without being severed from one another. This aligns with the attempt to understand the world not as a collection of fixed entities but as constantly changing and connecting 'flows,' much like the concept of 'assemblage' or 'connected flows' proposed by philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. 『Half & Halfs』 physically embodies and explores the process by which these contrasting elements converge into a single visual narrative within the photographic frame. The coexistence of contrast/opposition on the left and right or top and bottom of the landscape transcends simple composition, revealing a physical yet philosophical tension created by the two opposing worlds, while simultaneously proposing the possibility of reconciliation and coexistence within them.
In terms of photographic technique, the artist actively utilises tilt and shift lenses. These lenses are effective in adjusting perspective and shifting the plane of focus, thereby emphasising the horizontality and symmetry of space. In 『Half & Halfs』, these lenses are used to make two disparate landscapes or elements appear as if placed on a single plane, or to create intentional dividing lines that starkly highlight the contrast while combining them into a single image. This is a crucial physical device for visually embodying the harmony and potential for connection between opposing elements. This work also introduces a mathematical way of thinking as a methodology for analysing and understanding the world. He seeks to approach the essence of landscape through the process of observing and analysing the order and structure of nature, and the patterns of the city, from a mathematical perspective.
Furthermore, 『Half & Halfs』 extends to an effort to visualise dichotomous thinking and the concept of binary code (0s and 1s) that forms the basis of the digital age. This is an attempt to reflect upon the very manner in which we perceive the world by dividing it into two terms, and to explore the meaning and limitations contained within such a simple division. In particular, the artist poses fundamental questions about traditional photographic frame ratios. He points out that commonly used ratios such as 3:2 or 4:3 are 'groundless' conventions originating from the film era and determined by the convenience of manufacturers' designs, and he rejects them. Instead, he creates new frame ratios suited to the essence of the landscape and his artistic intention. This involves panoramic ratios based on the primitive shape of the square (1:1 ratio), expanded or combined in multiples. This frame, starting from the most basic form and gradually expanding, can be seen as a tool for visually expressing his unique perspective and interpretation of the world, and an attempt to capture connections and expansions beyond dichotomy.

'Errors' or 'glitches' that occur within seemingly perfect digital systems or dichotomous thought processes are points that reveal unexpected connections or the limitations of the system. By reflecting the concept of such errors within the photographic image, the artist seeks to reveal that the division or connection of the world is not always perfect or predictable, and that the instability or anomaly inherent within it is also a part of reality.
In conclusion, the 『Half & Halfs』 series, far from merely presenting contrasting landscapes side by side, is an attempt to visually demonstrate through physical techniques, philosophical contemplation, mathematical analysis, and a fundamental inquiry into frames and ratios, that the boundaries of a dualistic world are not fixed but fluid, that flows are not segmented, and that opposing worlds are always potentially connectable to each other. This potential is ultimately completed by 'the observer's performative perception' that maximally suppresses distortion, meaning how the viewer looking at the photograph perceives and endeavours to connect the world for themselves.

This work implicitly contains concepts of spatial circulation and directionality, similar to Louis Kahn's architectural design approach, emphasising that landscape is not merely a static backdrop but a structure that holds a series of time and movement.

Thus, the Manual of Landscape series integrates various theoretical layers including philosophy, aesthetics, architecture, urban studies, physics, and religious thought, reconstructing the relationship between nature, humanity, landscape, and perception through the artist's unique comprehensive perspective. The series of photographic works, at the intersection of technology and contemplation, asceticism and sensation, proposes another world beyond landscape and a hypothesis unique to the artist.
